About Todtler

Most writing software is built around features. Todtler is built around their absence.

There is no formatting toolbar, because the moment you start adjusting fonts and margins, you have stopped writing. There are no tabs or panels, because every element competing for your eye is a word you did not write. There is no autosave, no document map on the side. There is only text.

What Todtler does

- Opens and saves files of the following formats: OpenDocument Text (.odt, the open standard used by LibreOffice, OpenOffice, and others), Markdown (.md), Fountain (.fountain), and plain text (.txt).
- Markdown and Fountain syntax highlighting - Runs in any terminal on Linux, macOS, and Windows.
- Adjusts font size with a keypress, so you can find the reading size that suits you
- Supports accented characters and international text via full UTF-8
- Remembers your zoom preference between sessions
- Lets you remap every keyboard shortcut to your liking
- Chapters can be folded/unfolded individually or all together by a single keyboard shortcut
- Includes typewriter mode, which keeps your cursor at the bottom of the screen as text scrolls up, like paper feeding through a machine

What Todtler does not do

It does not connect to the internet. It does not track anything. It does not have a subscription, a cloud sync, an account, or a marketplace. It does not open PDFs, play music, or manage your calendar.

It edits text. That is all.

Who Todtler is for

Writers who want to write. People who find themselves adjusting fonts instead of finishing sentences. Anyone who has opened a document and spent the first ten minutes fiddling with the toolbar.

If you have ever wished your editor would simply get out of the way, Todtler was built for you.

The file formats

By default, Todtler saves your work as ODT, the OpenDocument Text format. This means your writing is never locked into a proprietary format. Any version of LibreOffice, OpenOffice, or Google Docs can open it. Your files belong to you.

Apart from ODT, Todtler also supports the Markdown, Fountain, and Plain Text formats. Check the FAQ page for more details.
